Point Mutation

A point mutation is the smallest possible type of mutation. It changes only one nucleotide. This animation shows a point mutation in which a single base is inserted into a codon. This type of mutation is called a frame-shift mutation because it changes all of the codons to the right of the mutation. Thus, as you can see, a single base change can have a dramatic effect on a polypeptide sequence.
